FBI and CISA warn refrigeration attacks could threaten food safety
The FBI and CISA say attackers are actively targeting industrial refrigeration and cold-chain monitoring systems worldwide, putting food storage and equipment safety at risk.
These systems regulate or track conditions that keep refrigerated goods safe. If an intrusion disrupts or manipulates their control or monitoring, food could spoil, equipment could be damaged, and fire hazards could follow. The agencies have not identified a specific product, attack method, or affected facility, so the exposure cannot be bounded to a vendor or incident list.
For food producers, cold-storage operators, refrigerated transport companies, and their service providers, a cyber incident can reach into the refrigeration process itself. IT containment may not restore safe operating conditions if that process has been disrupted.
