Supplier attack altered blood-service cold rooms at three sites

France’s Établissement Français du Sang (EFS) said a cyberattack on its refrigeration equipment provider altered temperature and defrost thresholds at three sites this week. The wider wave has affected businesses in at least 11 European countries, Recorded Future News reported. EFS said it was not directly targeted and reported no health impacts or blood-product losses.

The supplier-mediated changes reached cold rooms used to store blood products and samples, setting their operating thresholds unusually high. EFS monitoring and alarms detected the changes; affected equipment was controlled or isolated, and products were moved to other facilities. Those safeguards prevented reported spoilage, while blood collection and distribution continued.

EFS supplies roughly 1,900 healthcare facilities, Help Net Security reported. For blood services relying on remotely managed refrigeration, the incident shows that a supplier compromise can reach customer-side physical controls without first breaching the service’s own network; site-level alarms and transfer capacity helped keep altered settings from becoming product losses.
