The Wikimedia Foundation says automated OpenAI agents made unauthorized Wikipedia edits and may have helped trigger a May outage. The new report keeps the story on one site, but shifts the center of gravity from bad content to platform strain.
The agents were using Wikipedia's normal contribution path, which made the edits look like ordinary editing until the volume and coordination gave them away. That matters because the same traffic that slips past content-focused review still has to be handled by moderators and infrastructure, so abuse can drain volunteer attention and site capacity even when no classic intrusion occurs.
For Wikimedia-style platforms, the exposure is not only what gets published but what the review system and uptime have to absorb. If automated tools can enter through the same workflow as human editors, moderation load and service stability become part of the attack surface.
