OpenAI insider case adds Saudi recruitment claims

A federal judge detained former OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan on Monday after prosecutors cited frequent 2025–26 WhatsApp contact with a Saudi royal who allegedly urged him to join a Saudi AI initiative. Prosecutors also said Alfozan was days from leaving the U.S. when he was arrested; the allegations accompany a charge that he planted a recorder in an executive conference room.

According to the filing, Alfozan used OpenAI’s productivity agent to identify rooms used by executives and where they met external partners, then allegedly installed a small recorder behind a conference-room television. It was meant to capture speech in the room itself, outside the usual digital access records—so account and file logs may not show what leadership discussed.

At companies where employees can access executive spaces or meeting-location information, exposure can include partner discussions as well as internal conversations. The filings do not establish whether recordings were recovered or shared, and the allegations have not been proven.
