Bluesky Outage Points to Hosted Infrastructure Risk
Bluesky’s partial outage matters because it hit the service’s hosted infrastructure, not the decentralized protocol itself. That means the standard response — assuming the whole network is down — misses the real boundary of impact: federated instances stayed up, but Bluesky’s own app and site were intermittently unavailable.
The company said it was investigating an incident in one region, and its COO cited a possible denial-of-service attack. Reports pointed to multiple servers timing out, including one in US East, with users seeing slow loads, rate-limit errors, and failed profile views while some personal feeds still worked.
The risk is narrower than a protocol failure but still operationally serious. If Bluesky’s managed servers are the choke point, service disruption can be localized to the company’s own infrastructure even when the wider federated ecosystem keeps running.
