Quest Diagnostics disclosed Thursday that unauthorized access discovered Wednesday may have exposed patient records in Quanum Lab Services Manager, which Quest materials say serves about 500,000 clinicians across thousands of North American locations.
Quest paused the service during its investigation. Quanum lets clinics place lab-test orders and view results; customers can use paper requisitions instead, shifting that work into a manual process. Quest has not said how many patients or which records were accessed.
For practices that rely on Quanum, the outage is a separate burden from the possible data exposure: paper keeps orders moving, but until Quest defines the records involved, clinics cannot determine which patients may need privacy follow-up. Quest said the incident had not affected other parts of its business, though it paused several systems during the investigation.
