OpenAI has shifted its model security posture after the Hugging Face incident and Astra capability findings, pausing a two-week reinforcement-learning run and holding its largest planned frontier training run while it rolls out stronger containment. The company says the new controls are mandatory for reinforcement learning and evaluation at the Sol capability tier or higher.
The new setup watches model activations at every sampled token, pushes suspicious sequences into automated investigation, and makes human response time part of the control loop: if no one can prove the alert is false within 30 minutes, the run is paused. Workloads that execute model-generated or untrusted code must stay in stronger sandboxes, with network boundaries arranged so one compromise cannot simply reach the internet or internal systems.
For teams running tool-using or code-executing models, the point is that pre-release testing is no longer the only gate that matters. Once a model can act inside a workflow, the exposure lives in the runtime environment itself, and whatever trust boundary exists has to hold while the model is running, not just before it ships.
