Binance incident puts stablecoin issuers in the response path
Binance paused withdrawals on multiple networks while investigating a suspected security incident, as Tether and Circle said they had frozen more than $2.3 billion in associated USDT and USDC. Binance told TechCrunch and BleepingComputer it was investigating reports, but has not confirmed that funds were stolen. Blockchain reports put transfers in the billions, while estimates of assets tied to the incident differ.
Tether and Circle can block movement of the stablecoins they issue. They said they froze tokens linked to the incident as those assets moved through their networks, showing that suspected funds can be immobilized after leaving Binance. That does not confirm the total loss or stop other crypto assets from moving.
For exchanges, custodians, and businesses that hold or accept USDT or USDC, the response now includes issuer-level controls beyond the exchange where an incident began. The total loss and the fate of other reported transfers remain unsettled.
