Yandex loses redundancy as third data center is hit
The Record and other outlets report that Ukrainian drone strikes hit a third Yandex data center in Vladimir over the weekend, after earlier damage to sites in Sasovo and Kaluga, leaving three of Yandex’s six Russian facilities affected. Yandex said the Vladimir data center shut down completely and that the remaining infrastructure is unstable.
That matters because the strikes are now taking out physical capacity, not just causing a temporary outage. With redundancy already cut back, Yandex Cloud, Yandex Pay, and other services that ride on its servers have less spare infrastructure to fail over to, while the company’s supercomputing capacity for AI training is also degraded.
For customers and services built on Yandex infrastructure, the exposure now sits in the provider’s ability to recover capacity, not only in the damaged sites themselves. Even if individual systems come back online, the incident can keep cloud, payments, and training workloads unstable until the underlying datacenter footprint is rebuilt.
