30 Minnesota Utilities Hit Through Shared OT Connectivity
A single coordinated incident can now knock multiple municipal water systems offline at once when their operating gear is reachable over the network. That turns a local outage into a regional operations problem, and the standard assumption that one plant can be handled in isolation no longer holds.
Minnesota said more than 30 communities saw water and wastewater disruption across Sunday and Monday. In at least one case, operators disconnected affected equipment from the network to stop the attack from spreading or being retargeted, and restored service after reconfiguration; officials also said the water itself remained safe.
The origin is still unknown, so the immediate risk is the blast radius, not attribution. What matters is that shared or remotely connected OT paths let one incident ripple across many municipal plants, forcing isolation and recovery work that reaches beyond a single utility.
