Breach Costs Hit Record as Trust Becomes the Expense
The bill for a breach is no longer dominated by cleanup. Lost sales and damaged trust now drive the biggest cost, because an incident can keep hurting revenue long after the technical response is over.
IBM’s 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report puts the global average at $4.99 million, up 12% year over year, based on 602 organizations breached between March 2025 and February 2026. It also calls out AI-backed attacks as part of the cost pressure, alongside ransomware and extortion tactics that lean on public exposure, service disruption, and brand damage.
Healthcare remained the most expensive sector at $6.6 million, followed by financial services, industrial, technology, and entertainment. The pattern is clear: breach economics now include reputation loss and customer churn, not just incident response and recovery.
